2025 Old Dominion Treasure Trek
The Old Dominion Treasure Trek is a fun, family-friendly scavenger hunt that takes place across Virginia. Participants follow a series of eight creative clues—some hidden online and others waiting along trails. On the trail, clues appear as QR codes, each revealing a hint that leads to the next step in the journey.
The ultimate goal? A hidden medallion placed on one of Virginia’s trails. The first registered player to discover it can turn it in for a $500 prize—but only official participants are eligible to win.
Blending adventure, history, and the outdoors, the Treasure Trek encourages explorers to experience Virginia’s scenic backroads, historic landmarks, and off-road trails while learning more about the state’s rich culture and natural beauty. More than a hunt, it’s a shared adventure—bringing together a community of explorers who keep Virginia’s spirit of discovery alive.

You can sign up at the bottom of the page to play the game.
We aim to launch the game October 1st, 2025. That gives enough time for people to sign up to play along, for us to have the clues setup, etc.
We also need time to have time the treasure medallion created along with the clue markers created
The date could change as we need a minimum of 25 players will be needed to start the game. Should we not have 25 players, we will run the game as a lower payout based on the number of players.
Great question!
Clues will be found in three types of ways.
First, through online presence like email, this page, Youtube or the Facebook Group. These clues will come out ever few days for you to help narrow where to go look.
Next, we will also have clue markers on a few Virginia trails that you will be able to scan to get a unique clue. (any of the trails in Virginia)
You WILL need at least one of those clues to get to the end of the game, so you have to head out on the trails at least once, up to three times.
NO clues will be on private property, unless it’s a participating business storefont. The clues will be easy to identify by the clues themselves, although you will need to look around for marker/next clue.
For example, trail clues could be on a sign, trailhead marker, wall , rock, tree or the like.
Finally, you could get a letter in the mail as a clue.
Sometimes you may need to combine two clues to make a whole clue.
They will be 3D printed clues attached to something along the trail, a signpost, a trailhead, guardrail, rock or other structure. They could also be placed in businesses storefronts that wish to sponsor the game. The clues will have QR codes on them which will enable you to get the clue. The clue markers will be no larger than 4″ by 4″.
You will leave the clue in place for others to find.
Once the game is completed, our volunteers will remove the clues from the trails or businesses.
We will have between 8-12 clues per game.
The prize will be at least $500 cash. The winner that finds the Medallion will mail it to us and once we get it, we will send a check to the winner via USPS mail.
The prize could be more depending on the number of people that enter. Half the money raised will go the prize while the other half will go to the Trail to Recovery portion of the nonprofit.
Hard to say, if we have a great turn out we may do this 3-4 times a year. If the turn out isn’t that great, this may be the only time we do it.
Yes! Since we are a 501c3, it is tax deductible.
Yup, we have teamed up with Bonfire to produce all our merch including a tee shirt, profits go to the nonprofit when you order.

So, if no one finds it once all the clues are provided, we will push out additional clues until someone does find it.
Then they will not win the prize and the game will reset. Those with a ticket will play again for free the next round. Should someone take the medallion before a player finds it, we will make sure another one is in its place so they can find it.
Sure thing, here is a clue that has nothing to do with the game, but it’s a clue that will be very similar to something you would see.
📜 Example Clue:
“Where metal meets mountain, I stand watch in red.
Count the bolts in my frame, then add the year the Blue Ridge Parkway was finished.
That number will open your next hint.”
