At Virginia Off Road, we believe that off-roading is more than just adventure—it’s a chance to learn, grow, and make a positive impact on our trails and communities. That’s why we’ve built a series of educational courses for every age group and skill level, from kids just starting out to adults pursuing advanced trail leadership.

Each course is designed to teach not only driving skills but also safety, responsibility, and stewardship of Virginia’s outdoor spaces.

Here’s a look at the programs you can take through Virginia Off Road:

Off-Road Explorers for Kids

Our Off-Road Explorers program is built especially for kids, making it the perfect first step into the world of off-roading. Designed for third- through fifth-graders, this free course is classroom-friendly and can even be used by teachers. Kids learn about trail safety, respecting nature, and how off-roading can be both fun and responsible.

When they complete the course, each child (or class) can earn a FREE Off-Road Explorers badge and certificate, making it not only educational but also rewarding. This program helps the next generation understand that adventure and environmental care go hand in hand.

Leave No Trace Behind

The Leave No Trace Behind course focuses on one of the most important parts of off-roading: protecting the land we enjoy. Participants learn how to minimize their environmental footprint while exploring Virginia’s trails. Topics include:

  • Staying on designated trails
  • Proper waste disposal
  • Respecting wildlife and natural habitats
  • Practicing trail stewardship

By completing this program, riders gain the knowledge needed to keep Virginia’s trails open and beautiful for future generations.

Trailmaster Certification

The Trailmaster Certification is Virginia Off Road’s advanced training program, designed for individuals who want to take their off-roading expertise to the next level. This course covers advanced trail navigation, assessing difficult terrain, group leadership, and safe recovery practices.

Earning Trailmaster Certification shows that you are ready to lead others on the trail safely and responsibly, making it a great fit for club leaders, guides, or anyone who wants to set a higher standard of knowledge and skill.

Master the Terrain Course

For those looking to go beyond Trailmaster, the Master the Terrain course is the ultimate advanced program. This course is built for seasoned off-roaders who want to test and refine their abilities on the most challenging terrain Virginia has to offer. Participants will dive into advanced recovery techniques, complex obstacle negotiation, and strategies for navigating unpredictable environments such as steep climbs, rock gardens, and muddy ravines.

More than just driving, this course also emphasizes problem-solving and decision-making under pressure—skills that separate casual drivers from true masters of the trail. Graduates of this program leave with the confidence and expertise to handle virtually any off-road challenge.

Note: this course is for 4WD Club donors and lifetime members only.

Off-Road 101 Course

For those brand new to off-roading, the Off-Road 101 course provides a strong foundation. It introduces the basics of vehicle capabilities, essential safety practices, and trail etiquette. Participants will learn how to approach obstacles, understand the importance of proper tire pressure, and practice safe driving techniques that build confidence behind the wheel.

This is the course to take if you’re just starting your journey into off-roading and want to do it the right way. Those that complete the course earn a free membership to the non profit along with the member badge and the trail badge that was completed.

Off-Road OHV Course

The Off-Road OHV Course is geared toward those operating off-highway vehicles such as ATVs, UTVs, and side-by-sides. It emphasizes proper handling, understanding how different terrains affect performance, and staying safe in unpredictable conditions.

Whether you’re using an OHV for work, recreation, or both, this course equips you with the skills to enjoy the ride while minimizing risks.
