MTT Module 6

Module 6 – Vehicle Prep for Extreme Environments

An advanced off-roader prepares their vehicle like a race team — with the understanding that the nearest parts store may be 100 miles away.
Gearing: If you’ve increased tire diameter significantly, re-gearing to ratios like 4.88 or 5.13 restores low-speed torque for crawling without excessive clutch or throttle use.

GPS deviceCooling: Low-speed, high-load situations like rock crawling can overheat engines and transmissions. Larger radiators, transmission coolers, and high-flow fans can prevent heat-related failures.

Waterproofing: Dielectric grease on connectors, extended breather tubes for axles and transfer cases, and sealed battery terminals prevent water damage during deep crossings.

Spare parts: U-joints, belts, hoses, and tie rods are common trail-breakage points. Carrying these, along with the tools to install them, can turn a trip-ending failure into a minor delay.

Load management: Heavy gear must be secured low and centered to maintain stability. Roof-mounted spares or fuel increase COG and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.
