Overlanding Module 7 and 8

Module 7 – Environmental Stewardship & Local Regulations

Overlanding is a privilege dependent on public trust and responsible use. Every traveler is an ambassador for the entire community.

1. Legal Compliance:
In Virginia and most states, motorized travel is permitted only on designated routes shown on official Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs). Ignoring this leads to fines or closures.
2. Fire Safety:
Only build fires where allowed and fully extinguish them before leaving. Use fire rings or portable pits.
3. Habitat Protection:
Never drive across meadows or streams unless marked crossings exist. Ruts and sediment damage ecosystems.
4. Local Support:
Buy fuel, food, and supplies from nearby communities. It builds goodwill and demonstrates the positive economic impact of overlanding.
5. Leave No Trace:
Minimize impact—pack out waste, respect wildlife, and leave campsites cleaner than found.
