Intro toOverlanding

The Introduction to Overlanding course is designed for anyone who dreams of venturing beyond the pavement and exploring Virginia’s backroads, national forests, and hidden mountain trails with confidence, responsibility, and purpose. Overlanding combines the spirit of adventure with practical skills in trip planning, vehicle preparation, navigation, and environmental stewardship. This course introduces participants to the fundamentals of vehicle-based travel and teaches the knowledge and mindset needed to travel safely and sustainably across varied terrain.

What you will learn.

Participants will learn how to plan extended journeys, set up efficient and low-impact camps, understand trail etiquette, and handle emergency situations with confidence. Whether you drive a Jeep, Toyota, Bronco, or adventure van, this program will help you build the foundation for self-reliant, respectful travel. No prior experience is required—just a willingness to learn, explore, and protect the places we all love.

Upon completion of the course and successful passing of the final quiz, graduates may claim the official Virginia Off-Road “Overlanding” Badge for $3.80. This small fee supports our nonprofit educational mission and qualifies as a 100% tax-deductible donation to Virginia Off-Road (a 501(c)(3) organization). This program is an AORSI Certified Course, meaning it meets the national standards set by the American Off-Road Standards Institute for quality, safety, and environmental responsibility. Earning your Overlanding Badge represents not only your personal achievement, but also your certified commitment to responsible exploration and stewardship across the Commonwealth and beyond.
